Stained Glass Glimpse #1: Ferris Bueller's Day Off

America Windows by Marc Chagall, seen in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

My first post! As a stained glass artist, it’s impossible to ingest media content without homing in on any stained glass in the background. I have been collecting images and scenes from movies, television shows, and even books/audiobooks for years, wanting to share all the moments when stained glass jumped out at me.

To start this passion project, I’m sharing the first stained glass glimpse in my real life that really meant something to me personally!

This iconic scene in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off shows Ferris and Sloane stealing a kiss in front of the amazing America Windows by Marc Chagall. Their “field trip” to the Art Institute of Chicago is set to a dreamy song called “Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want” by Dream Academy. This part of the movie is depicted as a montage of Ferris, Sloane, and Cameron parading around and absorbing the historic and beautiful works in the museum.

From the AIC website: “In response to the city’s enthusiasm for his work and the Art Institute’s great support, French artist Marc Chagall offered to create a set of stained-glass windows for the museum. After three years of planning, Chagall determined that the windows would commemorate America’s bicentennial, celebrating the country as a place of cultural and religious freedom and detailing the arts of music, painting, literature, theater, and dance.”

I grew up in Madison, WI, and the Art Institute in Chicago was a favorite destination for my family. We came to know most of these pieces shown in the movie (probably because they were in the movie) and had the chance to enjoy them every year. When I visited as a child, the America Windows were displayed in a hallway central to the museum, illuminating the path with the moody blue refraction from the glass. While researching them for this post I learned they have been moved and are now illuminated with artificial lighting. (I’m fairly certain I’ll have strong opinions about this, but I’ll wait to visit again before I huff and puff.)

There is so much more to share and learn about these amazing stained glass windows! Do yourself a favor and search them out to see how beautiful they are.

In honor of sharing my first stained glass glimpse, and to mimic the gorgeous blues in Chagall’s America Windows, please check out my All Blues palette for my mandalas! Take a look at my Etsy page to reserve yours now. All orders will ship out on July 15, 2022.
