Stained Glass Glimpse #2: The Walking Dead

July 12, 2022 Colleen Clifford

Here is another sighting that inspired the launch of Stained Glass Glimpses! I laughed out loud after seeing the dramatic use of stained glass in the battle between Rick and Negan in The Walking Dead, Season 8, Episode 16. The stained glass windows are obviously imitative, but the broken pieces are clearly still useful as a weapon!

Close-ups show what appear to be actual lead lines, but they are just silver tape placed over clear glass to create the knotted pattern. The segments of glass were then painted in the various colors, and weathered for the post-apocalyptic world.

Do any other glass makers have thoughts about the manufacturing of these windows? I suppose for a window that must look worn and will need to be broken, it may make sense to go this route. But I think the look of authentic stained glass will always create a more authentic scene.
